Gardens turned into Battle Fields

In Matthew 13 you can read a story of Jesus called the 'Parable of the sower'.  The story is about a farmer sowing seed, some falling on the path, some on stoney ground, some growing up amongst weeds and others on good, open soil.  The depth of their roots and the condition of their growth was down to these different environments. On first glance a very nice garden story.  But its not a nice garden story.  Its the story of fight for survival.  Fighting against the devil's schemes, the distractions and temptations around us, to deepen our spiritual root system and flourish in every circumstance. On October 31 the people assembled again, and this time they fasted ... Nehemiah 9:1 In the book of Nehemiah we see the process of the people of God returning from captivity and reestablishing themselves with God. Fasting brings us clearly before God. Times of refreshing come as you consecrate yourself to the Lord and find He breaks off those loose ends that hang around. You are being shaped and revived for the next season of your life. What did these returning people of God do? - The first thing they did as a nation was to come around the Word of God. They read, but they also allowed it to speak.
