THE GOOD SHEPHERD

Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.  You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.  Psalm 23:4-6

Some incredible thoughts about Jesus, our Good Shepherd, that King David gets from his experience as a shepherd.

Jesus is nothing but GOOD.  When He is with us there is no need to fear, lack anything or go off on some lonely path.  His protection, guidance and comfort should be everything we need.

He anoints our head with oil.  Protecting the sheep from irritating and frustrating insects around their head, in their nose and ears. The oil of the Good Shepherd protects you from the constant irritating forces of the devil.

He says my cup overflows.  A cultural expression of the time meaning that for as long as my cup was being refilled by the host I am welcome to continue to enjoy his hospitality.  We are always welcome in the presence of the Good Shepherd.

His love and goodness are devoted to us!  He left the 99 to go after the 1, even though it meant a huge risk and made no economic sense, leaving 99.  The Good Shepherd is devoted to you.

That is why David says – of course I will dwell in your House forever.  Where else would I want to be, other than the presence of the Good Shepherd.

Let this mark your year in 2017.
